Instagram was acquired by Facebook in 2012. Terms of use may change, so you should always check the most up-to-date terms of service, which as of December 2016 were located here. Also as of that date, the terms state that “Instagram does not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service.” Instead, you “grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service,” subject to Instagram’s Privacy Policy. Regarding display of advertising with your content, Instagram says it “may display advertisements and promotions, and you hereby agree that Instagram may place such advertising and promotions on the Service or on, about, or in conjunction with your Content.” Deleting your account and content is addressed on this page, which states that when you delete your account, “your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers will be permanently removed.” However, Instagram’s Privacy Policy notes that after termination, Instagram and its affiliates “may retain information (including your profile information) and User Content for a commercially reasonable time for backup, archival, and/or audit purposes.”
